Historical Background
In 1924, as San Francisco boomed with prosperity in the decade following World War I, the Outer Richmond neighborhood blossomed with block upon block of speculative tract houses. Small groups of houses with similar forms and designs were erected and sold to San Franciscans who wanted the latest in modern suburban housing. George J. Becker was a grocer, who owned the California Delicatessen & Grocery on Clement Street. Along with grocery store manager, William Klute, and the Meyer Brothers contracting firm, Becker purchased a number of properties along this block of 39th Avenue and developed a series of houses. Although Becker, Klute, and the Meyer Brothers sold most of the houses to eager buyers, Becker himself chose this house at 678 39th Avenue as his own. From the time it was built, through the late 1940s, the house was occupied by Becker, his wife Rita, and their two children.

Neighborhood

Outer Richmond

The Outer Richmond has a laid-back, beach-town quality, along with abundant outdoor opportunities for those who enjoy bundling up on foggy days. Both Ocean Beach and Golden Gate Park are within easy reach, and a good portion of the area has wide streets and relatively flat terrain for biking and walking. Several Muni bus lines serve the area, including the 38 Geary, the 5 Fulton, and the 31 Balboa.

Some neighborhood homes come with ocean views and are near several beaches. Pocket-sized China Beach is popular for sunbathing, while mile-long Baker Beach provides stunning views of the Marin Headlands and the Golden Gate Bridge. On sunny weekends, Ocean Beach is filled with kite flyers, surfers, and families with picnics.

Hikers head to the Lands End Trail, which meanders along the cliffs above the sea, past the Sutro Baths and the Legion of Honor. Numerous walking and jogging paths crisscross adjacent Golden Gate Park. At the private Lincoln Park Golf Club, golfers enjoy lovely ocean views from every hole.

After a vigorous day of recreation, locals grab a bowl of clam chowder at Louis', which overlooks the Sutro Baths at Point Lobos. Geary Boulevard, the Outer Richmond’s main shopping artery, is lined with restaurants of every ethnicity, from Mexican, Russian, French, and Italian to a plethora of establishments serving food from every corner of Asia.

Cultural opportunities abound in this neighborhood as well. The Legion of Honor in Lincoln Park features art from around the world. The popular art-house Balboa Theatre regularly shows second- and third-run Euro and independent flicks. Golden Gate Park’s renowned museums are just a short drive or bus ride away.

For housing options, the Outer Richmond features three- and four-bedroom, single-family homes with hardwood floors, bay windows, yards, wood-burning fireplaces and garages. Newly remodeled condominiums and multiunit homes are also available for singles and couples. Some homes offer spectacular views of Golden Gate Park, the Presidio, and Ocean Beach, where residents can stroll out onto their decks to enjoy a wonderful sunset.
